Science and its uncertainity

Science

What is science for me:- Science to me is coming up with new ideas and innovations to discover something that is yet to be discovered. Science gives us reasons for what and why things exists. The aim for science is to reveal what is visible to us so we can know in depth on what is around us. Curious people could be scientists. Science can never be certain. Discovering things by experiments but concluding what the experiment teaches us is never certain as it keeps changing the more experiments that are carried out over the span of time. This case study helped me develop my understand that science is a risky business as said in the case study 'Not only do you have to start your work by assuming the existence of wrongness, you must count on a very high probability their accomplishments, they tend to brag all over time, to anyone willing to listen.'

Science always raises a question for me 'does that mean what we know is never certain to be right and if we do know that why do we believe in what science teaches us even after knowing that science can never be certain. For example science told us that Earth is round but is it actually true because at first it was flat and we believed it. Today we believe earth is round. But is it still true? How can we rely on what is uncertain

Indigenous Beliefs of Africans
Human Spirits: Most African religions firmly believe that people continue to live, through their spirits, after death. These spirits are often referred to as ancestral spirits. It is believed that spirits of the ancestors remain very interested in what happens in their families and communities. Most African religions divide ancestral spirits into two groups:
  • The Recent Dead Ancestors: After an elder dies her or his spirit remains actively interested and engaged in the life of their family and community for many years. The ancestral spirits are most concerned about the prosperity and security of their families and communities. They intercede with God on the behalf of their communities.
  • The Spirits of the Long Dead: As time passes, the spirits of the recently dead gradually withdraw from the lives of their descendents and communities. It is believed that these spirits live with God. However, some ancestral spirits remain actively engaged for many generations. This is particularly true of the spirits of important individuals. For example, it is believed that the spirits of great rulers or founders of nations maintain their interest and power for a long time, perhaps centuries after their deaths. These ancestors are most interested in promoting the longevity of their kingdoms, nations, and communities.
Thus this gives me an understanding that after a person dies his/her spirit stays for their family and community for many years and are interested in what is happening and they give their lives for the community and descendants thus showing how important the family and community is to them and how people and spirits keep engaged.

Is history a science?

Could history be a science?

To me, i personally feel no history is not a science. This is because:-
When scientists conduct their research, they are governed by laws of the scientific method. Progress in science rests on systematic testing, observation, and measurement of phenomena, normally requiring that results can be repeated if experiments are carried out with the same conditions. This allows new knowledge to be integrated into scientific scholarship once the validity of testing has been accepted.
Historians, by contrast, are always, dealing with information that is incomplete. Indeed, we lose more of the raw material we need to understand the past the further away we get from it. When we talk about new research on the past, very frequently what we mean is a reinterpretation of the materials that formed the evidentiary basis of older monographs.
There isn’t such a thing as “the historical method.” The reason that popular histories don’t necessarily keep tracking developments in scholarship the way popular sciences do, is simple. History is not science!

Moral Dilemma

You are speeding in your car on a one-way street, through very thick woods with a mad gunman chasing you and shooting at you from behind. Up ahead, you see a pedestrian crossing the street. You figure you have enough time to stop to let him cross, but with the thick woods, you cannot drive around him. Would you:
a. Stop to let the pedestrian cross, even though you are being shot at or
b. Hit the pedestrian and continue speeding away from the gunman.

I would stop to let the pedestrian cross, even though i was being shot at and this is because I am a person who would try save the other person's life and couldn't think of killing him so i would stop.

Real life situation

I once cheated off a test as I hadn't revised at all and was scared of failing so cheated off the person besides me instead of giving it a thought that he actually studied n worked hard for the test.

Gren Craven's argument's learning outcome. Tripti

Gren Craven's video is about global warming and the cause behind it. His biggest point of argument is that the decision should be made quick before things turn out to be worse later. He looks at the point whether we should or shouldn't take action regarding global warming and who actually caused this. By considering these points in mind I have learnt that making decisions at the right time is a very important key for things to be right, If the decisions are not made at the right time, things can go wrong and out of control and make sure what decision is made must be appropriate to keep us away from sufferings.

IS SEEING BELIEVING.

Us humans believe in what we see. According to us, the image our eyes create for us and what our vision shows us is what it actually is, but it may not be that way, it could be an illusion and our eyes could be mistaken on the image it is portraying infront of us. We do have evidence that what we see is actually what it is or supposed to be, it could be totally different. We believe what we see and the image that is shown to you but in reality it could be untrue. So we ask ourselves is what we see actually what it is and should be. To an extent yes we should believe in what we see as it is more likely to be that in reality but there could be some things that would appear different than it really is, there could be things we may not see but believe in so it is not necessary for us to believe in something should not be visible. It could mean believing in something we could not see but have faith in its existence as well.

Reflection on language. Tripti :)

After having the discussion about language, according to me language is a way of communicating with people to and having to let them know on how you feel. You can communicate with people in different ways, like the use of text messages, pictures, and many more, language is how you portray tht specific means of communication. For example if you take textng, language can differ the way you lay out your texts, if they have a number of smiley faces, the language portrayed to the reader would be more friendly than the text messages with exclamation marks and caps locked which gives out the feeling of anger and frustration. Language is not only what is written, its the help to understanding of communication we are trying to convey to the other individual. Sometimes language can differ on understanding, this means that we need to understand what the individual is trying to say to us, For example if I say i don't like my phone, this may mean that there could be a certain app in my phone that I do not like. it doesn't mean I dislike the entire phone. In the same way if I say i don't want to eat doesn't mean that the food is not good, it could mean i am not hungry thus language can be interpreted in different ways by different individuals as it can have more than one meaning to it. language according to me is a way of communicating to others, which not necessarily could be written or spoken but the way its layed out makes it effective in its own way as through the use of images and many more it could also be portrayed, language if understood could be in many forms, it is just something that needs to be understood between the individuals
